Challenge 2010 – Training for growing challenges!

The latest rescue tools, latest vehicles, and the latest rescue techniques: At the annual training called "Challenge" for fire brigades and rescue services, the focus is on the state of the art in rescue. The participants do not only learn about the latest technologies, but also how to deal with them.

LUKAS tools were in service once again at the event in Hamm, Germany, on September 4 and 5. The challenge: the latest generation of luxury vehicles.

But first on the agenda was theory. Via presentations and moderated cutting demonstrations, the audience learned about new sources of danger for rescuers and trapped persons: even stronger posts made of high-strength steel and the increasing number of safety systems built into modern vehicle bodies. For safe and fast rescues, knowing about alternate access methods is essential.

Professional support prepares for real emergencies.

All participants then had a chance to demonstrate their new knowledge in practise right away, in realistic rescue scenarios. An important goal here was to optimise the cooperation between rescue services and fire brigades in high-stress situations. Qualified instructors evaluated the rescuers' performance and technique after each exercise, showing them where there was room for improvement. So everybody learned something new through instant feedback and by watching the others.

After the training sessions, there was time for everybody to sit down together and discuss their experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. All the participants agreed that the training provided valuable experience that they will be glad to have for future rescues.
